What Do You Do There?

Sunday teachings are typically two hours in length. The teaching usually begins with recitation from the prayer book, the heart sutra (preceded by a brief prayer from the monks) and a five minute meditation. Afterward we have the teaching followed by a brief break. We conclude with additional prayers, recitation of mantras, and closing prayers by the monks.

Wednesday meditation follows a similar structure to the Sunday teaching but instead of a teaching we do two meditation sessions. The Wednesday session is typically one hour.

The teachings and meditation session are open to everyone, you do not have to be Buddhist to attend. When you are here, you may note some people may do prostrations and other activities. You are not required to do anything you are uncomfortable with while attending a session. Often a sangha member will pass out chant books (they have both English and Tibetan in them). You do not have to chant with the rest of the group if you do not want to. We only ask that you are respectful during a session and that you enjoy the experience!

Dharma Etiquette

Most people who visit DGI worry about what they are supposed to do when they come. Here are a few guidelines:

Please take off your shoes before entering the teaching area.  In general, it is considered impolite to place your feet outstretched towards the teacher or alter.

Visitors can sit on the mats on the floor or chairs, whichever is preferred. Comfortable clothing is suggested but do wear appropriate attire.

If you are late, please enter as quietly and quickly as possible.

The typical greeting is to press both palms together and bow your head slightly. Often Tibetans, when they greet someone, may grasp your hands in a handshake and touch foreheads.

In regards to class materials, it is considered respectful not to place materials on the floor. Also, it is best to step around materials than step over them.

When the teacher enters the room, it is considered respectful to stand until he sits down. Often sangha members will bow towards the alter, but you are not required to do so.

If you have questions, it is best to wait until the end of the teaching to ask them.

Children are more than welcome to attend but please note we do not have child care at this time. We ask that parents be respectful of other participants during the teachings. Monks greatly enjoy children and enjoy meeting them.
